Blue Sapphire Shrimp are a striking deep-blue variety of Neocaridina davidi, valued for their rich navy to sapphire coloration that stands out beautifully against green plants and light substrates. High-grade individuals display solid, even blue coverage across the entire body, making them a favorite in aquascaped and nano aquariums.
They are considered easy to keep, hardy, and beginner-friendly when kept in stable freshwater conditions. Like other Neocaridina varieties, they adapt well to a range of parameters as long as changes are gradual and water quality is maintained.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size: 5+ gallons (larger tanks provide better stability)
-
Temperature: 20–26 °C
-
pH: 6.5–7.5
-
Water Hardness: Moderately hard (adequate minerals support proper molting)
-
Temperament: Completely peaceful
-
Diet: Omnivore — algae, biofilm, shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, occasional protein treats
Behavior & Compatibility:
Blue Sapphire Shrimp are peaceful scavengers that constantly graze on surfaces throughout the aquarium. They are ideal for:
-
Species-only shrimp colonies, or
-
Peaceful nano community tanks with small, non-predatory fish such as rasboras and small tetras
Avoid housing them with larger fish, cichlids, or species known to prey on shrimp. Even moderately sized community fish may eat shrimplets.
Tank Setup:
Heavily planted aquariums with mosses, fine-leaf plants, and plenty of hiding spaces greatly improve shrimp confidence and breeding success. Stable parameters are more important than chasing exact numbers. Avoid copper-based medications and ensure gentle filtration.
Additional Notes:
-
Breed readily in freshwater.
-
Color quality can vary depending on genetics and diet.
-
Excellent algae and biofilm grazers.
A deep, velvety blue freshwater shrimp that brings bold color and natural cleanup benefits to planted and nano aquariums.
