At 4–5 inches in diameter, these are substantial pods that command attention in any aquascape, bringing a bold, organic presence that smaller botanicals simply cannot achieve. Their hollow interior and open structure make them a natural choice as a shelter and resting spot for fish, shrimp, and invertebrates, while their textured outer surface develops a rich coating of biofilm over time that shrimp and small bottom dwellers will graze on constantly.

Like all natural botanicals, Surocco Pods release tannins and humic acids as they slowly break down in water — contributing gently to the soft, slightly acidic, tannin-rich conditions that blackwater species thrive in, and adding a warm amber tint to the water that mimics the natural rivers and streams these animals come from.

Key Benefits

Large 4–5 inch diameter — a genuine statement piece in any aquascape

Hollow interior provides a natural hideout and shelter for fish, shrimp, and invertebrates

Releases tannins and humic acids gradually, contributing to blackwater conditions

Textured outer surface encourages biofilm growth — an excellent natural food source for shrimp and small invertebrates

Completely natural, chemical-free, and safe for all fish, shrimp, and invertebrates

Breaks down slowly for long-lasting botanical benefits

How to Use

Rinse thoroughly before adding to the aquarium. Soak in water for 24–48 hours beforehand to waterlog the pod and help it sink readily — larger pods may take longer to become fully waterlogged. Position on a stable area of substrate where it won't roll or shift. A white, cotton-like biofilm may develop on the surface in the first week — completely harmless and will be consumed by shrimp and cleanup crew. Replace when fully broken down.

Details

Size: 4–5 inches (approximately 10–13 cm) in diameter

Natural product — shape, colour, and exact size vary between pieces

Sold individually

Ideal For

Blackwater and biotope aquarium setups

Shrimp tanks — provides biofilm grazing surfaces, tannin release, and shelter for moulting shrimp

Cave-dwelling fish and bottom dwellers seeking natural shelter

Nature-style aquascapes and planted tanks where a bold natural focal point is needed

Betta tanks — provides both tannin release and a natural resting and hiding spot

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0645/4768/4574/files/Photo_c76bf674-ca83-49a4-aa92-26174c534b16.png?v=1741201181
