Tannins and Water Colour

Like all natural driftwood, Amazon Wood will release tannins into the water when first introduced — gradually tinting the water a warm, tea-brown colour that mimics the natural blackwater environments of the Amazon Basin. This is completely harmless and actually beneficial for many fish and shrimp species that come from soft, acidic blackwater habitats. If you prefer to keep the water clear, soaking the wood in a bucket of water for several days before adding it to the tank, or running activated carbon in your filter, will significantly reduce tannin release.

Preparing Your Amazon Wood

Rinse the wood thoroughly before adding it to your aquarium. New pieces may initially float — soaking in a bucket of water for several days will waterlog the wood and help it sink naturally. Boiling smaller pieces is an effective way to speed up this process and sterilise the wood at the same time.

What to Expect

• Each piece is completely unique in shape, size, and character — natural variation is part of the appeal
• A white, cotton-like fungal bloom may appear on the surface in the first few weeks — this is completely harmless and will be consumed by shrimp and cleanup crew or disappear on its own
• Tannins will gradually tint the water — use activated carbon if you prefer clear water while still benefiting from the wood's biological properties
• Epiphytic plants such as Anubias, Java Fern, and mosses can be attached with fishing line or aquarium-safe glue
