Description & Care Info

Anubias barteri var. nana 'Pinto' | Tissue Culture — Pest-Free and Ready to Plant

Anubias nana 'Pinto' is one of the most coveted variegated plants in the planted aquarium hobby. A carefully selected cultivar of Anubias barteri var. nana, it is prized for its breathtaking variegated leaves — each one displaying a unique, unpredictable blend of white, light green, and deep green that makes every single plant completely individual. No two leaves are ever identical, and under good lighting the white variegation creates a striking contrast against the darker green that draws the eye immediately in any aquascape.

This listing is for tissue culture — grown in sterile laboratory conditions and supplied in a sealed cup, completely free from pest snails, algae, parasites, and unwanted hitchhikers. The safest way to introduce a new plant to your aquarium, and especially valuable for shrimp tanks where pest snails and contaminants can cause real problems.

What Makes Tissue Culture Worth It

Tissue culture plants arrive clean, young, and vigorous — unaffected by the emersed-to-submerged transition stress that potted nursery plants often experience. Because they are grown in sterile gel rather than soil or water, there is zero risk of introducing unwanted organisms to your tank. Simply rinse off the nutrient gel, divide into portions, attach to hardscape, and you're done.

Preparing Your Tissue Culture Plant

  • Remove the plant from the sealed cup
  • Rinse all nutrient gel thoroughly from the roots and rhizome under clean water
  • Divide into small rhizome sections — each section with at least a few leaves will grow independently
  • Attach to driftwood, rocks, or hardscape using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe super glue gel
  • Do not bury the rhizome — this will cause rot and kill the plant

Care at a Glance

  • Scientific name: Anubias barteri var. nana 'Pinto'
  • Origin: Cultivar
  • Type: Rhizomatous
  • Growth rate: Slow
  • Height: up to 2 inches (5+ cm)
  • Light demand: Medium — good lighting enhances variegation; avoid excessive intensity which encourages algae growth on leaves
  • CO2: Not required
  • Best placement: Foreground to midground, attached to hardscape

A Note on Variegation

The white patterning of Anubias 'Pinto' can shift depending on environmental conditions. Under good lighting the variegation intensifies and becomes most striking. In lower light or suboptimal conditions, new leaves may emerge a more uniform green. Stability and consistent parameters will encourage the most vivid and consistent variegation over time.

Important — Do Not Bury the Rhizome

The rhizome — the thick horizontal stem from which the leaves emerge — must remain fully exposed above the substrate at all times. Even partial coverage will cause it to rot and kill the plant.

Compatible With

  • All community fish, shrimp, and snails
  • Ideal for shrimp tanks — tissue culture guarantees no pest snail or contaminant introduction
  • Perfect for nano tanks, low-tech planted tanks, and premium aquascapes where its variegated patterning can be appreciated up close
