Nerite Snails are widely regarded as the single best algae-eating snail available to freshwater aquarists — and for good reason. Compact, hardy, peaceful, and endlessly industrious, they tackle virtually every common form of aquarium algae including green spot algae, green dust algae, brown diatoms, and hair algae, grazing tirelessly across glass, substrate, hardscape, and plant leaves without ever damaging the plants themselves. Our assorted selection draws from a rotating mix of some of the most sought-after and visually striking Nerite varieties available in the hobby — including Zebra Nerites, King Koopa Nerites, Red Racer Nerites, Military Helmet Nerites, and more — meaning every order brings its own unique combination of shell patterns and markings.

Unlike pest snail species, Nerite Snails will not overpopulate your tank — their larvae require brackish or marine water to develop, making reproduction in a freshwater aquarium impossible. You get all the benefits of a hardworking cleanup crew with none of the population explosion risk.

Care at a Glance

Nerite Snail Tank Setup

Nerite Snails thrive in mature, well-established aquariums with plenty of hard surfaces to graze — tank glass, smooth rocks, driftwood, and hardscape all provide ideal grazing areas. Good water flow and oxygenation suits them well. A tight-fitting lid is strongly recommended — Nerite Snails are accomplished climbers and will exploit any gap in an open top tank to escape, particularly when first introduced to a new aquarium.

Calcium and Shell Health

Nerite Snails require adequate calcium in the water to maintain strong, healthy shells. In naturally hard water this is rarely an issue, but in soft water or remineralised RO setups, calcium supplementation is recommended. Adding a piece of cuttlebone to the tank is the easiest and most effective solution — it dissolves slowly, releases calcium steadily, and is completely safe for fish, shrimp, and plants. Crushed coral in a filter bag is another excellent option, though it will gradually raise pH so is best suited to tanks already running at neutral to alkaline parameters.

Signs of calcium deficiency include pitting, cracking, or thinning of the shell edges — if you notice this, increase calcium supplementation immediately.

A Note on Nerite Eggs

Nerite Snails will deposit small, white, sesame seed-like eggs on hard surfaces throughout the tank. These eggs will not hatch in freshwater, but they can be difficult to remove and some aquarists find them unsightly on dark décor and equipment. This is worth bearing in mind when placing them in display aquariums with dark hardscape.

Feeding Your Nerite Snails

In a well-established tank with healthy algae and biofilm growth, Nerite Snails will largely feed themselves. If algae levels are low, supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and spinach, and high-quality sinking foods with high plant or spirulina content. Remove any uneaten vegetables within 24 hours to avoid fouling the water.
