Swordtails are classic, lively livebearers known for their bright colors and constant activity. Males are easily recognized by the elongated “sword” extension on the lower part of their tail, while females are larger and lack the tail extension. Assorted varieties may include shades of red, orange, green, black, pineapple, wagtail patterns, and mixed color morphs—making every group visually diverse and energetic.
This species is easy to keep and beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for community aquariums. Swordtails are hardy, adaptable, and active swimmers that appreciate open space along with plants for cover. As livebearers, they will reproduce readily in mixed groups.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons
-
Temperature: 22–28°C
-
pH: 7.0–8.2 (prefers neutral to slightly alkaline water)
-
Water Hardness: Moderate to hard
-
Temperament: Peaceful but active
-
Diet: Omnivore — flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable matter
Swordtails do well in peaceful community tanks with other livebearers, tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and gouramis. Avoid housing with aggressive or fin-nipping species. Because they are active and can grow larger than guppies or platies, they benefit from swimming space and stable water conditions.
A hardy, colorful livebearer full of personality—perfect for active community aquariums.
