Bala Shark - Balantiocheilos Melanopterus

The Bala Shark is a sleek, silver-bodied freshwater fish known for its torpedo-shaped profile and bold black-edged fins. Despite the name, it’s not a true shark — but its streamlined shape and constant movement give it that classic “shark” look. When kept properly, Bala Sharks are impressive, fast-moving schooling fish that create striking activity in large aquariums.

They are considered moderate in care, mainly due to their adult size and need for significant swimming space. Juveniles are often sold small, but they grow quickly and require long-term planning.

• Tank Size: Minimum 125 gallons (larger preferred for adults)

• Adult Size: 12–14 inches

• Group Size: 5+ (true schooling species — do not keep singly)

• Temperature: 22–28 °C

• Diet: Omnivore — high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen foods, vegetables

Behavior & Compatibility:

Bala Sharks are peaceful schooling fish but can unintentionally intimidate smaller or timid species due to their size and speed. They do best with:

• Larger tetras

• Barbs

• Gouramis

• Peaceful cichlids

• Larger catfish

Avoid housing them with very small fish that could be swallowed as they mature. Because they are powerful swimmers, a tight-fitting lid is essential — Bala Sharks are known jumpers.

Tank Setup:

Provide long tanks with open swimming space along with driftwood or plants around the perimeter. Strong filtration and regular maintenance are important, as they are sensitive to poor water quality.
