Cocoa pods are quiet overachievers. As they slowly break down in water, they release tannins that gently stain the water a warm tea-brown colour — mimicking the natural blackwater environments that many tropical fish, shrimp, and amphibians call home. These tannins have natural antibacterial properties and help create soft, slightly acidic water conditions that benefit sensitive species.
