Banded Pentazona Barb - Desmopuntius Pentazona

Banded Pentazona Barb (Desmopuntius pentazona) is a charming and eye-catching schooling fish known for its bold black vertical stripes set against a coppery-bronze body. Often confused with its close cousin, the Tiger Barb, the Pentazona Barb is much more peaceful, making it an excellent addition to community aquariums.

Native to blackwater streams and peat swamps in Borneo, these barbs thrive in soft, slightly acidic water with plenty of plant cover and subdued lighting. Their natural environment is often tannin-stained and shaded, so replicating this with driftwood and leaf litter can bring out their best coloration and behavior.

They are happiest in groups of at least six, where their schooling behavior shines and any nippy tendencies are minimized. Their calm demeanor makes them suitable for tanks with other peaceful fish, including tetras, rasboras, and dwarf cichlids.
