One of the most extraordinary fish in the hobby, the Barred Mudskipper is a fully amphibious goby that spends more time out of water than in it. With their expressive eyes, quirky "walking" movement using their pectoral fins, and bold personalities, mudskippers are a true conversation piece. This is a specialist fish for a dedicated keeper — not a community tank fish — but incredibly rewarding when kept correctly.

Tank Setup
Mudskippers require a paludarium — a tank with both a water section and an exposed land area. Roughly half the tank should be dry, sloped substrate (fine sand works well) that the fish can crawl onto freely. High humidity above the waterline is essential. A secure, tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable — mudskippers are skilled escape artists. Brackish water is required using marine salt to achieve SG 1.015–1.020. Driftwood, rocks, and raised platforms give them surfaces to perch and territories to claim.

Tank Mates
The Barred Mudskipper is best kept as a species-only setup or in a same-species group of 3 or more. Males are highly territorial, so groups need large tanks with well-defined territories and visual breaks. Mixing with other fish, invertebrates, or amphibians is strongly discouraged. Their brackish water requirements and amphibious lifestyle make them incompatible with the vast majority of freshwater species.

Feeding
Carnivores that do best on live and frozen meaty foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, mysis, small crickets, and finely chopped krill or clam. Many individuals refuse dry or freeze-dried foods entirely. Feed on the land area or at the water's edge for best results.
