The Barred Mudskipper (Periophthalmus argentilineatus) is a truly unique amphibious fish known for its bold personality, expressive eyes, and land-loving habits. Native to intertidal mangrove zones across the Indo-Pacific, this species is adapted to life both in and out of water—often seen “walking” on its pectoral fins, perching on rocks, and interacting with its environment in ways no other fish can.

Its body is elongated and mottled with silver-gray to brown hues, highlighted by horizontal bars and a metallic sheen. The independently moving, bulging eyes give it near-360° vision and a curious, comical look. Mudskippers are highly territorial, especially males, and will display impressive fin-raising gestures and jaw gapes to assert dominance or court mates.

This species requires a brackish paludarium-style setup with both land and shallow water areas. They love to burrow, bask, and climb, so structures like smooth rocks, branches, and mud mounds are ideal. Though fascinating to watch, they are best kept alone or in well-planned groups to reduce aggression.
