Black Ghost Knifefish - Apteronotus Albifrons

The Black Ghost Knifefish is a striking freshwater species recognized for its smooth, black, eel-like body and graceful, ribbon-like fin that runs along the underside. A pale band near the tail and a lighter head marking give it a “ghost-like” appearance that makes it one of the most visually unique fish in the hobby.

This species is a weakly electric fish, using electrical signals to navigate and sense its environment. It is primarily nocturnal, spending much of the day hidden and becoming more active in low light or after dark. Providing a dim environment with plenty of cover helps reduce stress and encourages natural behavior.

Care Requirements:
Apteronotus albifrons requires a large aquarium due to its adult size and active swimming habits, with a minimum of around 120 gallons recommended. It prefers warm, soft to moderately hard water with stable parameters and excellent filtration. Water quality is very important, as they can be sensitive to fluctuations. A soft substrate, driftwood, caves, and botanicals should be included to provide secure hiding areas, along with subdued lighting.

Diet:
This species is carnivorous and does best on a varied diet of protein-rich foods. Offer frozen or live options such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blackworms. With time, many individuals will accept prepared sinking foods, but a varied diet is ideal for long-term health.

Tankmates:
Black Ghost Knifefish are generally peaceful but should be kept with appropriately sized, calm tankmates. Avoid very small fish, as they may be viewed as food, and avoid aggressive or overly active species that could stress them. Suitable tankmates include larger peaceful community fish, some larger tetras, and peaceful cichlids.
