The Black Orange Dorsal Otopharynx (Otopharynx lithobates), also known as the “Z Rocks Lithobates,” is one of the most striking peacocks of Lake Malawi. Males display a velvety black body contrasted by a vibrant, flame-orange dorsal fin—a combination that makes them one of the most sought-after haplochromines in the hobby. Females, while more subdued in color, contribute to peaceful group dynamics and successful breeding.

This species prefers a rocky setup with open swimming areas and plenty of caves or ledges for males to establish territories. Though generally more peaceful than other haps, males may show aggression during breeding or when competing for space. Their graceful movement and bold coloration make them a centerpiece in any Malawi cichlid tank.
