Bloody Mary Shrimp – Neocaridina davidi
Bloody Mary Shrimp are a premium deep-red variety of Neocaridina davidi, prized for their rich, translucent ruby coloration that often appears darker and more saturated than standard cherry shrimp. When kept in groups, their intense red tones create stunning contrast against green plants and dark substrates in planted aquariums.
They are considered easy to keep, making them excellent for beginners and experienced aquascapers alike. Hardy and adaptable, they thrive in stable freshwater setups and are a popular choice for nano and community tanks.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size: 5+ gallons (larger tanks improve stability)
-
Temperature: 20–26 °C
-
pH: 6.5–7.5
-
Water Hardness: Moderately hard preferred (important for proper molting)
-
Temperament: Completely peaceful
-
Diet: Omnivore — algae, biofilm, shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables
Behavior & Compatibility:
Bloody Mary Shrimp are non-aggressive scavengers that spend their time grazing on algae and biofilm. They are best kept:
-
In species-only shrimp colonies, or
-
With very peaceful, small fish such as rasboras or small tetras
Avoid housing them with aggressive fish, large cichlids, or species known to eat shrimp. Even some “peaceful” fish may prey on shrimplets.
Tank Setup:
Heavily planted tanks with mosses, fine-leaved plants, and hiding spaces help shrimp feel secure and increase survival of young. Stable water parameters are more important than chasing exact numbers. Avoid copper-based medications.
Additional Notes:
-
Breed readily in freshwater.
-
Excellent natural cleaners.
-
Color intensity improves with good diet and selective breeding.
A vibrant, easy-care freshwater shrimp that adds brilliant red color and natural algae control to planted aquariums.
