Though commonly confused with frontosa due to the genus name, Cyathopharynx or Ophthalmotilapia ventralis is a more accurate placement, depending on the source. These cichlids are prized for their elongated, thread-like ventral fins tipped in shimmering blue or gold, paired with a streamlined body that reflects soft metallic hues.

Males are particularly striking and develop long filaments and deeper coloration as they mature. They’re known for their peaceful temperament compared to other Tanganyikan cichlids, making them ideal for a calm, rocky setup with open swimming space and some sand substrate for display behaviors. While not aggressive, they can be territorial during breeding.
