The Blue Neon Goby (Stiphodon atropurpureus) is a genuinely spectacular and underappreciated freshwater fish that rewards the aquarist willing to meet its specific needs with a display of colour that rivals many marine species. Native to the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams and rivers of the Philippines, Indonesia, and surrounding Pacific Islands, this compact, bottom-dwelling goby is best known for the extraordinary colouration of mature males — a vivid, iridescent electric blue that covers the entire body and shifts and shimmers with every movement under aquarium lighting, accented by darker markings and a brilliant orange-red throat patch that intensifies during displays and competition between males.

Females and juveniles are considerably more subdued in colouration — pale and streaked — making the transformation of a juvenile male into full adult colouration one of the most rewarding colour developments in the freshwater hobby.

Stiphodon gobies are rheophilic — adapted to life in fast-moving, highly oxygenated water — and their care requirements reflect this. They are not a fish for stagnant, low-oxygen setups, but in the right environment they are hardy, active, and long-lived. A river-style aquarium with strong, directional water flow, excellent oxygenation, and a substrate of smooth rocks, pebbles, and fine sand suits these fish perfectly — replicating the fast-moving, rocky stream habitat they come from. Flat rocks and smooth boulders provide essential grazing surfaces for biofilm and algae, which form a critical part of their diet. Driftwood and hardy plants such as Anubias and Java Fern add structure and visual interest without impeding flow. Avoid fine particulate substrate that can cloud in strong current — smooth pebbles and coarse sand work best.

Males are territorial toward other males and will compete aggressively for the best grazing territories — provide ample rock structures and visual barriers if keeping more than one male, or keep a single male with one or more females.

Feeding Your Blue Neon Gobies

Primarily herbivorous grazers that feed on algae, biofilm, and periphyton scraped from hard surfaces in the wild. In the aquarium, ensure the tank has well-developed biofilm and algae growth on rocks and hardscape — this is their primary food source and cannot be skipped. Supplement with high quality sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as zucchini and spinach, and occasional protein-rich treats such as baby brine shrimp and daphnia. Avoid overfeeding supplementary foods — biofilm grazing should always be their main nutritional source.
