Blue Panda Apistogramma

The Blue Panda Apistogramma is a beautiful dwarf cichlid prized for its contrasting coloration and compact size. Males typically display shimmering blue tones across the body with darker markings and highlighted fins, while females are smaller and often show more subtle coloration that becomes brighter yellow during breeding. Their striking patterns and curious personality make them a favorite for planted and natural-style aquariums.

Blue Panda Apistos are considered moderate in care, best suited for aquarists who can provide stable water conditions and a well-structured environment. As dwarf cichlids, they establish small territories near the bottom of the aquarium but are generally peaceful when kept with appropriate tankmates.

• Tank Size: 20 gallons minimum (larger for communities)

• Water Hardness: Soft to moderately soft

• Temperament: Peaceful to mildly territorial

• Diet: Carnivore / micro-predator — quality pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms

Behavior & Compatibility:

Blue Panda Apistogrammas do best in peaceful planted aquariums with small, calm fish. Suitable tankmates include tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, and small Corydoras species. Avoid large, aggressive fish that may stress them or compete for territory.

Providing caves, driftwood, leaf litter, and dense plants helps them feel secure and encourages natural behaviors. During breeding, females will guard eggs and fry inside caves or sheltered areas and may become more territorial.

Additional Notes:

• Best kept as pairs or a single male with one or two females in larger tanks.

• Appreciates dim lighting and natural décor.

• Excellent choice for South American biotope aquariums.
