Description & Care Info ▼
The Borneo Sucker Loach “Bloody Mary,” a striking variety of Gastromyzon sp. Bloody Mary, is a vibrant and highly specialized freshwater species known for its intense red coloration and unique body shape. Its flattened body and wide, suction-like fins allow it to cling tightly to rocks and glass, perfectly adapted to fast-flowing streams in its natural habitat. The bold “Bloody Mary” coloration makes this variety especially sought-after, standing out beautifully against dark stones and lush green algae.
This species is peaceful and best suited for aquarists who can replicate its natural environment. Unlike typical community fish, Borneo Sucker Loaches thrive in high-flow, highly oxygenated tanks with strong filtration. They spend most of their time grazing on biofilm, algae, and microorganisms growing on surfaces, making them fascinating to watch as they methodically move across the aquarium. While generally calm, they may show mild territorial behavior toward their own kind, so providing ample space and grazing surfaces is important if keeping multiples.
A river-style setup is ideal, using smooth stones, driftwood, and powerheads to create current. Clean, cool, well-oxygenated water is essential to their health, and they are sensitive to poor water quality or unstable conditions. Though they will graze naturally, they should be supplemented with algae wafers, Repashy-style gel foods, and occasional blanched vegetables to ensure proper nutrition.
