Bucephalandra Sordidula 'Blue' | A Rare and Iridescent Gem From Borneo

Bucephalandra Sordidula 'Blue' is one of the most sought-after and visually striking plants in the planted aquarium hobby — and it's easy to see why. Native to the rocky riverbanks of Borneo, this exceptional plant produces deep, dark leaves with a mesmerising iridescent blue sheen that shifts and shimmers as the light catches it from different angles. No photograph truly does it justice. In person, under good aquarium lighting, it is one of the most uniquely beautiful plants you can keep.

Still relatively rare in the trade, Bucephalandra Sordidula 'Blue' is the kind of plant that draws attention from anyone who sees your tank and has experienced aquarists and beginners alike asking the same question — what is that?

The Buce Difference

Bucephalandra as a genus has developed a passionate following in the aquascaping world, prized for its extraordinary variety of leaf shapes, textures, and colours — many of which exist nowhere else in the plant kingdom. Sordidula 'Blue' represents the very best of what this genus has to offer, combining an otherworldly colour with the tough, adaptable nature that makes all Bucephalandra so rewarding to keep.

Care at a Glance

  • Origin: Borneo, Asia
  • Growth rate: Slow
  • Height: 2–4 inches (5–10+ cm)
  • Light demand: Low to moderate — higher lighting intensifies the blue iridescence
  • CO2: Not required, though supplementation will encourage faster growth
  • Best placement: Foreground to midground

Tank Setup and Placement

Like Anubias, Bucephalandra is a rheophyte — a plant naturally adapted to growing attached to rocks and driftwood in fast-moving water. In the aquarium, attach it to hardscape using thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe glue and it will gradually root itself in place. Never bury the rhizome in substrate, as this will cause it to rot and kill the plant.

Sordidula 'Blue' looks particularly stunning when positioned where light hits it at an angle, allowing the blue iridescence to shimmer and shift. Midground placement on a prominent piece of driftwood or rock makes it a natural focal point in any aquascape.

Feeding and Maintenance

Bucephalandra is undemanding and adapts well to a wide range of water parameters. It benefits from regular doses of a quality liquid fertiliser, which will encourage healthy new growth and maintain the intensity of its colouration. Like all slow-growing plants it is prone to algae growth on its leaves if light levels are too high or nutrients are imbalanced — a stable, well-maintained tank is the key to keeping it looking its best.

Compatible With

  • All community fish, shrimp, and snails
  • Particularly stunning in shrimp tanks, where its textured leaves provide ideal grazing surfaces and the contrast of shrimp against the blue foliage is exceptional
