Description & Care Info

Cardamine lyrata | A Graceful Trailing Stem Plant From Japan

Cardamine lyrata is a beautifully delicate and distinctive stem plant native to the marshes and wetlands of Japan and East Asia. With its trailing, vine-like growth habit, soft rounded leaves, and tendency to develop wispy aerial roots along its stems, it brings a uniquely natural and almost wild quality to planted aquascapes that more structured plants simply can't replicate. Planted in groups, it creates a lush, flowing curtain of green that adds movement and softness to any layout.

Still relatively underused in the hobby compared to more common stem plants, Cardamine lyrata is a rewarding choice for aquarists looking for something a little different — and one that performs beautifully with minimal fuss.

A Truly Versatile Plant

One of the things that makes Cardamine lyrata so appealing is its flexibility. In the aquarium it thrives fully submerged, growing stems of 8–20 inches (20–50 cm) with a trailing, cascading habit that looks stunning along the midground or background. In the warmer months it can also be grown in outdoor garden ponds, making it a genuinely multi-purpose plant for aquarists who keep both.

Care at a Glance

  • Type: Stem
  • Origin: Japan, Asia
  • Growth rate: Moderate to fast under good conditions
  • Height: 8–12 inches (20–30+ cm)
  • Light demand: Low
  • CO2: Medium — CO2 supplementation recommended for best growth
  • Best placement: Midground to background, planted in groups

Important — Temperature Sensitivity

Cardamine lyrata prefers cooler water and is one of the few aquarium plants that genuinely struggles in warmer setups. Keep water temperature below 82°F (28°C) — above this threshold the leaves become noticeably smaller and the plant grows leggier and less attractive. It is best suited to cool to mid-temperature community tanks and is an excellent choice for coldwater or temperate setups.

Planting Tips

Plant in groups of 5 or more stems for the most dramatic effect. The trailing growth habit and aerial roots develop most beautifully when stems are given room to spread and reach toward the light. Regular trimming of the tops and replanting encourages bushy, dense growth and prevents the lower stems from becoming bare.

Compatible With

  • All community fish, shrimp, and snails
  • Particularly well suited to temperate and coldwater setups alongside species such as White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Hillstream Loaches, and similar cool water fish
