Chocolate Cichlid | A Gentle Giant From the Amazon Basin

The Chocolate Cichlid (Hypselecara temporalis) is one of the most underrated and rewarding large cichlids in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Native to the slow-moving, tannin-stained rivers, streams, and floodplain lakes of the Amazon and Orinoco River Basins in South America, this impressive fish is prized for its rich, shifting colouration — a warm base of olive brown and chocolate tones overlaid with iridescent patches of green, orange, and gold that change subtly with mood, lighting, and environment. No two fish look quite the same, and the colours deepen and intensify beautifully as they mature.

What truly sets the Chocolate Cichlid apart from other large cichlids is its temperament. Nicknamed the "gentle giant" of the cichlid world, this species is remarkably calm and peaceful for its size — making it one of the few large cichlids genuinely suited to a spacious community aquarium with other similarly sized, peaceful fish.

Chocolate Cichlid Tank Setup

A spacious aquarium with a soft sandy substrate, driftwood, smooth rocks, and hardy plants such as Anubias and Java Fern replicates the Chocolate Cichlid's natural Amazonian habitat beautifully. Slow to moderate water flow is preferred — these fish come from calm, deep rivers and dislike strong currents. Tannins from driftwood and Indian almond leaves help recreate the soft, acidic blackwater conditions they thrive in and will enhance their colouration noticeably. Strong filtration is essential as these are large, heavy-feeding fish that produce significant waste, and bi-weekly water changes of 25–30% are recommended to keep water quality high.

Feeding Your Chocolate Cichlid

Omnivores with a good appetite and a preference for variety. High quality large cichlid pellets make an excellent staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and prawns, as well as blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, and peas. With patience and consistent feeding, many Chocolate Cichlids become tame enough to take food directly from their keeper's hand — one of the most rewarding experiences in the fishkeeping hobby.

Chocolate Cichlid Tank Mates

  • Large, peaceful South American cichlids such as Severums, Geophagus, and Angelfish
  • Silver Dollars and larger tetras such as Congo Tetras
  • Peaceful plecos and large corydoras
  • Avoid small fish that may be eaten
  • Avoid highly aggressive cichlids that may bully or stress them
  • Exercise caution during breeding periods — even the gentlest Chocolate Cichlid will become territorial when spawning

Breeding Chocolate Cichlids

Chocolate Cichlids are open substrate spawners that form strong, long-lasting pair bonds. The female deposits eggs on a flat rock or smooth surface, and both parents share guarding duties — a fascinating behaviour to observe. Soft, slightly acidic water and a flat spawning surface such as a slate tile or smooth rock will encourage breeding in a well-conditioned pair.
