Columbian Zebra Pleco L129 - Hypancistrus L129

The Columbian Zebra Pleco (L129) is a striking and highly sought-after species, known for its bold black-and-white striping that closely resembles the famous Zebra Pleco (L046). Its crisp patterning and compact size make it a standout addition to any aquarium, especially in setups with dark substrate or natural décor where its contrast really shines.

Unlike many larger plecos, L129 remains relatively small and is more manageable for mid-sized aquariums. It is primarily nocturnal but will often be seen resting on wood or rocks during the day once it becomes comfortable in its environment.

Care Requirements:
A minimum tank size of 25–30 gallons is recommended, with larger tanks preferred for groups. They thrive in warm, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow and excellent filtration. Provide plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and rockwork, as they appreciate secure territories. Stable water parameters and regular maintenance are essential.

Diet:
L129 Plecos are omnivorous with a strong preference for protein-rich foods. Offer sinking pellets or wafers as a staple, supplemented with frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. While they may graze on biofilm, they are not effective algae eaters and require regular feeding.

Tankmates:
They are generally peaceful and do well in community aquariums with non-aggressive fish. Suitable tankmates include tetras, rasboras, peaceful cichlids, and other calm species. Some territorial behavior may occur between males or with other bottom dwellers, especially in smaller tanks, so provide adequate space and multiple hiding spots.
