Assorted Female Guppies | Hardy, Peaceful, and Perfect for Any Community Tank
The Female Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is one of the most versatile and beginner-friendly freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby — and one of the most underrated. While male guppies often steal the spotlight with their vivid colours, females are larger, more robust, and bring a calm, graceful presence to the tank. Our assorted females come in a variety of colours and body patterns, making each purchase a surprise and adding natural variety to any community aquarium.
Female guppies are an excellent choice for aquarists who want all the charm of guppies without the rapid population growth that comes with keeping mixed-sex groups. They are peaceful, active, and endlessly entertaining to watch.
Female Guppy Care Guide
Care at a Glance
- Scientific name: Poecilia reticulata
- Adult size: up to 2.4 inches (6 cm) — females are notably larger than males
- Minimum tank size: 10 gallons, with more space recommended for groups
- Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
- pH: 7.0–8.5 — guppies prefer moderately hard, slightly alkaline water
- Best kept in groups of 3 or more
- Lifespan: 2–3 years with good care
Female Guppy Tank Setup
Guppies are adaptable and do well in a wide range of setups, but thrive in well-planted aquariums with gentle filtration and low to moderate water flow. Dense planting and floating plants provide cover and help females feel secure. A heater is essential to maintain stable tropical temperatures, and regular water changes are important to keep water quality high.
Feeding Your Female Guppies
Omnivores and enthusiastic eaters. A high-quality micro flake or small pellet food makes an excellent staple diet, supplemented regularly with frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworm to keep them in top condition and enhance their colouration.
Female Guppy Tank Mates
- Male guppies — if you wish to breed, keep 2–3 females per male to reduce stress on females
- Other peaceful livebearers such as platies, mollies, and endlers
- Small tetras, rasboras, and danios
- Corydoras, small loaches, and peaceful bottom dwellers
- Shrimp and snails
- Avoid fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs, and large or aggressive fish
A Note on Breeding
If you are keeping females that were previously housed with males, please be aware that female guppies can store sperm for several months and may give birth to fry even without a male present in your tank. Fry are live-born and will need dense planting or a breeding box to survive in a community setting.
