Description & Care Info ▼
The Filigree Corydora, commonly known as the Bearded Cory, Banded Corydoras, or Filigree Cory, is a distinctive and impressive bottom‑dwelling catfish from the coastal rivers of Brazil. Unlike most Corydoras, this species belongs to the genus Scleromystax and grows notably larger—often reaching around 9–12 cm (3.5–4.5 in) at full size. Males develop ornate “beard‑like” bristles on their cheeks and long pectoral and dorsal fins, giving them a textured, almost regal profile, while females tend to be a bit more robust and subtly patterned.
Filigree Corydoras are moderate in care. They are peaceful and make wonderful bottom cleaners in community aquariums, but they have a few unique preferences compared to smaller Cory species.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size: Minimum ~40 gallon (150 L) — larger preferred due to adult size and activity level.
-
Group Size: 5–6+ (schooling promotes natural behavior and confidence).
-
Temperature: ~18–24 °C (cooler than many tropical fish).
-
pH: ~6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
-
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard.
-
Substrate: Fine sand or very smooth gravel protects their delicate barbels while foraging.
-
Tank Setup: Provide shaded areas with driftwood, rocks, and plants; strong filtration and good oxygenation are important.
-
Diet: Omnivore — sinking pellets, catfish wafers, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and occasional live foods.
Behavior & Compatibility:
Filigree Corydoras are peaceful bottom dwellers that enjoy rooting through the substrate for food. They pair well with other calm community fish such as tetras, rasboras, danios, and peaceful livebearers, but avoid housing them with aggressive bottom dwellers or very large, boisterous fish. Because males can be territorial with one another, ensure adequate space and visual breaks if keeping multiple males.
An elegant, larger Corydoras‑type catfish with unique beard‑like features and engaging schooling behavior — perfect for medium to large peaceful community aquariums.
