Description & Care Info ▼
The Firemouth Cichlid is a classic Central American cichlid known for its bold personality and striking red-orange throat and lower fins, which flare dramatically when the fish is excited or displaying. The rest of its body is typically silver-gray with subtle vertical barring, but its fiery coloration makes it stand out in community tanks. Both males and females show bright color, though males tend to be larger and occasionally more territorial, especially during breeding.
This species is considered moderate in difficulty and is well-suited to aquarists who want a colorful, interactive cichlid without the aggression levels seen in some larger species. Firemouths are active and curious, often exploring their environment and establishing territories in well-decorated tanks.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons (40+ gallons ideal for pairs)
-
Temperature: 24–28 °C
-
pH: 6.8–8.0 (neutral to slightly alkaline)
-
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
-
Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive (territorial during breeding)
-
Diet: Omnivore — high-quality pellets, frozen foods, and occasional live foods
Behavior & Compatibility:
Firemouths do well in peaceful to moderately-tempered community aquariums with other similarly sized fish that can hold their own, such as larger tetras, rasboras, gouramis, larger barbs, and peaceful catfish like Corydoras. They appreciate a tank with open swimming space plus plenty of hiding spots—rocks, driftwood, and broad-leafed plants help break up sightlines and reduce territorial tension.
During breeding, a paired Firemouth may defend a chosen area, so provide plenty of visual boundaries to ease aggression. They’re generally not suitable with very small fish that could be perceived as food or overly aggressive species that may harass them.
A colorful, interactive Central American cichlid with fiery displays and engaging personality—great for intermediate aquarists and community tanks that can accommodate territorial behavior.
