Garra poecilura | The Black Garra — A Rare and Captivating River Dweller From Myanmar

Garra poecilura, known in the aquarium trade as the Black Garra, is a rare and intriguing species making its way into the freshwater hobby from the fast-flowing rivers of the Irrawaddy drainage in Myanmar. Named for its vividly patterned caudal peduncle and tail fin — poecilura literally meaning "variegated tail" in Ancient Greek — this compact, active bottom-dweller is a genuinely unusual find that will appeal to aquarists looking for something well outside the ordinary.

Like all Garra species, poecilura is equipped with a specially modified adhesive disc formed by the lower lip, allowing it to cling to rocks and surfaces in strong currents. It is a constant, active grazer — scraping biofilm and algae from any hard surface it can find — and its behaviour is endlessly watchful and fascinating to observe.

As a relatively newly introduced species in the hobby with limited documented care information available, Garra poecilura care recommendations are based on its known natural habitat and the well-established care requirements of closely related Garra species.

Garra poecilura Tank Setup

A river-style aquarium with strong water flow, high oxygenation, and plenty of smooth rocks, cobbles, and flat surfaces suits this species perfectly — replicating the fast-moving, rocky river habitat it comes from in Myanmar. Fine sand or smooth gravel substrate is recommended, with driftwood and rocks providing structure, shelter, and additional grazing surfaces. Bright to moderate lighting helps encourage the biofilm and algae growth that forms a critical part of their natural diet.

A tight-fitting lid is recommended, as Garra species are known to be capable climbers and may attempt to leave the tank if given the opportunity.

Feeding Your Garra poecilura

A natural grazer of biofilm, algae, and organic matter scraped from rocks and surfaces. In the aquarium, supplement with high quality sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and spinach, and occasional protein-rich treats such as bloodworm and brine shrimp. Flat rocks and smooth hardscape provide ideal grazing surfaces and should be considered essential rather than optional in the setup.

Garra poecilura Tank Mates

  • Small to medium peaceful river-dwelling species such as danios, rasboras, and hillstream loaches
  • Peaceful mid and upper water community fish
  • Can show territorial behaviour toward other bottom-dwelling Garra species — provide plenty of visual barriers and territory if keeping multiples
  • Avoid slow-moving or long-finned fish that may be stressed by the strong flow this species requires

A Note for the Adventurous Aquarist

As a species only recently introduced to the aquarium hobby with limited published care data, keeping Garra poecilura is a genuinely exciting opportunity to contribute to the collective knowledge of this species in captivity. If you keep these fish, we'd love to hear how they're doing!
