Giant Otocinclus - Hypoptopoma sp. aff. Elongatum

The Giant Otocinclus is a larger, more elongated relative of the classic Otocinclus, offering the same excellent algae-grazing behavior in a more substantial and eye-catching form. Its streamlined body, subtle striping, and extended shape give it a sleek, understated look that blends beautifully into natural and planted aquariums.

Despite the name, it remains a peaceful and gentle species, spending most of its time grazing on biofilm, soft algae, and surfaces throughout the tank. It is more visible and active than smaller Otos, especially in well-established aquariums.

Care Requirements:
A minimum tank size of 20–30 gallons is recommended, with mature, established tanks strongly preferred. They thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle to moderate flow and plenty of surfaces to graze on, such as plants, driftwood, and glass. Stability is key, as they can be sensitive to sudden changes or poor water quality.

They do best in groups and should not be added to newly set up tanks without established biofilm.

Diet:
Giant Otocinclus are primarily herbivores and biofilm grazers. While they will consume soft algae, it is important to supplement their diet with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini or spinach), and other plant-based foods to ensure they receive adequate nutrition.

Tankmates:
They are extremely peaceful and ideal for community aquariums. Suitable tankmates include small to medium peaceful fish such as tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid aggressive or highly boisterous species that may outcompete or stress them.

They should be kept in groups of at least 4–6 or more, as they are social and feel more secure in numbers.
