Description & Care Info ▼
Golden Otocinclus (Otocinclus affinis)
A soft-bodied, peaceful algae-eater prized for its rich golden-yellow coloration, the Golden Otocinclus is a striking color variant of the popular Otocinclus catfish. Small, active, and highly social, this species is a favorite for planted tanks and nano communities where natural algae control is a priority.
Size & Lifespan
Golden Otocinclus reach a maximum adult size of 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 4 cm), making them ideal for smaller planted setups. With proper care, they typically live 3 to 5 years.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
- pH: 6.5–7.5
- Hardness: 2–15 dGH (soft to moderately hard)
- Water Type: Best suited to soft, well-oxygenated, well-established water
Tank Requirements
A minimum tank size of 10 gallons (38 L) is recommended, with mature, algae-rich surfaces for grazing. Golden Otocinclus do best in heavily planted aquariums with driftwood, as biofilm and algae growth on hardscape make up a significant part of their natural diet. They are highly sensitive to sudden water changes and should only be introduced to fully cycled, stable tanks.
Temperament & Compatibility
A peaceful, schooling species that should always be kept in groups of 6 or more to reduce stress and encourage natural grazing behavior. Excellent community fish, compatible with small tetras, rasboras, dwarf shrimp, and other peaceful nano species. Not recommended with large or aggressive tankmates.
Diet
Primarily an algae grazer, the Golden Otocinclus thrives in tanks with established algae and biofilm. Supplement with blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach) and quality algae wafers, especially in newer or lower-algae setups, to prevent starvation.
Acclimation Notes
Otocinclus species are known to be sensitive during transport and acclimation. A slow drip acclimation of 60–90 minutes is strongly recommended, along with ensuring the tank has adequate biofilm/algae present before introduction.
