Description & Care Info

Helanthium 'Quadricostatus' | A Delicate and Graceful Foreground Plant From South America

Helanthium 'Quadricostatus' is a beautifully elegant and underappreciated aquarium plant native to South America, where it grows along riverbanks and shallow waterways from Colombia to Bolivia. With its slender, lance-shaped light green leaves reaching 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) in length, it brings a soft, graceful texture to the aquascape that contrasts beautifully against darker, broader-leaved plants such as Anubias, Bucephalandra, and darker stem plants. Planted in groups — where each rosette spreads to 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) wide — it creates a lush, flowing mid to foreground carpet that adds real depth and movement to any layout.

A relatively unfussy and rewarding plant to keep, Helanthium 'Quadricostatus' is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for something a little more refined and less common than the ubiquitous Amazon Sword — to which it is closely related.

A Note on Naming

There is some confusion surrounding this plant in the hobby and trade. It has historically been sold under several names including Echinodorus bolivianus var. magdalenensis and Echinodorus quadricostatus. All refer to the same plant — if you have encountered it under any of these names, this is the one.

Care at a Glance

  • Scientific name: Helanthium quadricostatus (syn. Echinodorus bolivianus var. magdalenensis)
  • Origin: South America — Colombia to Bolivia
  • Growth rate: Moderate under good conditions
  • Height: 4–6 inches (10–15 cm)
  • Spread per rosette: 6–8 inches (15–20 cm)
  • Light demand: Low to medium — thrives even in lower light conditions
  • CO2: Not required, though supplementation encourages stronger growth
  • Best placement: Foreground to midground, planted in groups

Planting Tips

Plant in groups of 5 or more for the most natural and visually impactful display. Given good conditions — adequate lighting, a nutrient-rich substrate, and stable water parameters — this plant will produce runners that spread naturally across the substrate, gradually filling in to create a lush, carpeting effect with minimal intervention. Very pale or yellowing leaves are a sign of micronutrient deficiency — dose a quality liquid fertiliser containing iron and trace elements to restore colour and vigour.

Compatible With

  • All community fish, shrimp, and snails
  • Particularly stunning alongside darker leaved plants where its light green colouration provides maximum contrast
  • Excellent for low-tech planted tanks and beginner aquascapers
