Hydrocotyle tripartita, widely known in the aquascaping hobby as Hydrocotyle sp. 'Japan', is one of the most popular and rewarding carpeting plants available in the planted aquarium hobby — and one of the fastest growing. Native to South-East Asia, this compact, clover-like plant produces small, intensely green, tri-lobed leaves on upright vertical stems that create a lush, layered, almost forest-floor-like carpet effect that is unlike any other carpeting plant in the hobby. Its unique growth habit — stems growing upward rather than creeping horizontally like most carpet plants — gives it a distinctive, three-dimensional texture that adds extraordinary depth and visual interest to any aquascape.

Achieving the Best Carpet

Good to high light and CO2 supplementation are the most important factors in producing the dense, compact carpet that makes Hydrocotyle tripartita so visually striking. In lower light the plant will still grow but will become taller, looser, and less compact. One of the most useful and unique techniques for maintaining a tight, low carpet is mechanical retardation — simply pressing the carpet down firmly with your hand during routine maintenance encourages the plant to grow more compactly and spread laterally rather than reaching upward. It sounds simple, but it genuinely works and is widely used by experienced aquascapers.

Planting Tips

Plant small portions a few centimetres apart across the foreground or midground substrate and allow the plant to spread and fill in naturally. Its fast growth rate means it establishes quickly — regular trimming is essential to keep it from overtaking slower-growing neighbours. Trim with sharp scissors and replant any healthy cuttings to fill gaps or expand the carpet.
