Jaguar Catfish

The Jaguar Catfish is a striking and uncommon freshwater catfish known for its bold spotted pattern that resembles the markings of a jaguar. Its tan to golden body is covered in dark irregular spots, giving it a wild, predatory appearance while still maintaining a relatively manageable size for home aquariums compared to many larger catfish species.

Despite its fierce look, the Jaguar Catfish is generally moderate in care and does well in appropriately sized aquariums with stable water conditions. It is primarily nocturnal and spends much of the day resting in caves or under driftwood before becoming more active at night.

Care Requirements:

• Tank Size: 75 gallons minimum

• Temperature: 24–28 °C

• pH: 6.0–7.5

• Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

• Temperament: Semi-aggressive, predatory toward small fish

• Diet: Carnivore — sinking pellets, frozen foods, earthworms, shrimp, and other meaty foods

Behavior & Compatibility:

Jaguar Catfish are bottom-dwelling predators and should be housed with medium to larger tankmates that cannot be easily swallowed. Avoid keeping them with small community fish such as tetras or rasboras.

Suitable tankmates may include:

• Larger barbs

• Medium cichlids

• Robust community fish of similar size

They are generally peaceful toward fish too large to be considered prey but may compete for territory with other bottom-dwelling species.

Tank Setup:

Provide plenty of hiding places, such as caves, driftwood, and rock structures. Dim lighting and soft substrate help replicate their natural environment. Because they are nocturnal, they often remain hidden during the day.
