Johnstoni Hap - Haplochromis sp.

The Johnstoni Hap (Haplochromis sp. “Johnstoni”*) is a lesser-known but striking Haplochromine cichlid from Lake Victoria and its surrounding regions. Males develop a deep metallic blue sheen with darker barring and may show flashes of red or yellow depending on mood and lighting, especially during courtship. Females are more subdued in coloration but still display graceful movement and form.

This species is somewhat more peaceful than many other Victorian haps but can become territorial during breeding. They do well in large, open aquariums with rockwork and sandy substrate, where they can stake out a territory and sift through the sand. Best kept in small harems (1 male to 2–3 females) or as part of a Victorian or Haplochromis community with similarly tempered species.
