The L333 King Tiger Pleco (Hypancistrus sp. L333 King Tiger Pleco Tank Setup

A warm, well-oxygenated aquarium with strong filtration, smooth substrate, and plenty of caves and tight hiding spots is essential for this species. Like all Hypancistrus, the L333 is a cave dweller by nature and must have secure retreats available — ceramic tubes, PVC pipes, clay caves, and hollow driftwood all work perfectly. Driftwood provides additional structure and grazing surface, and the tank should have moderate to strong water flow to replicate the oxygenated conditions of the Xingu River. These are predominantly nocturnal fish that are most active after lights out, though well-settled, well-fed individuals will venture out during the day.

Males can be territorial toward one another — provide one cave per fish and plenty of visual barriers if keeping multiple individuals.

Feeding Your L333 King Tiger Pleco

Primarily carnivorous — unlike common plecos, Hypancistrus species require a protein-rich diet and are not heavy algae eaters. High quality sinking carnivore pellets and insect meal granules form an excellent staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and blackworms. Blanched vegetables such as zucchini and cucumber can be offered occasionally. Feed after lights out for best results.

Breeding L333 King Tiger Plecos

One of the most rewarding aspects of keeping L333s is their willingness to breed in the home aquarium with the right conditions. Cave spawners like all Hypancistrus — the male selects and guards a tight cave, the female deposits eggs inside, and the male tends the eggs and fry exclusively until they are free-swimming. Cool partial water changes and slightly elevated temperatures are reliable breeding triggers. Fry are relatively straightforward to raise on crushed sinking foods and blanched vegetables.
