Lilaeopsis brasiliensis | A Delicate Carpeting Plant From South America
Lilaeopsis brasiliensis is one of the most popular and rewarding carpeting plants in the freshwater aquarium hobby — a compact, grass-like plant from South America that, under the right conditions, creates a lush, dense, emerald green lawn across the aquarium floor that is one of the most striking and sought-after effects in planted aquascaping. Native to the riverbanks, marshes, and coastal wetlands of Brazil and neighbouring South American countries, this stolon-forming plant spreads gradually across the substrate via horizontal runners, slowly knitting together into a tight, uniform carpet that perfectly replicates the natural grass beds found along South American waterways.
At 1–2 inches (3–5 cm) tall when well established, it is an ideal foreground plant that stays low, spreads naturally, and provides a beautiful contrast against taller midground and background plants.
Achieving the Lawn Effect
The dense, compact lawn effect that makes Lilaeopsis brasiliensis so desirable is achievable — but it does require patience and the right conditions. Good to high light intensity is the single most important factor in producing a tight, low-growing carpet. In lower light, the plant will still grow but will become taller, more sparse, and less compact. CO2 supplementation, while not strictly essential, makes a significant difference to growth rate and density and is strongly recommended for anyone aiming for a true carpet effect.

- Height: 1–2 inches (3–5+ cm) — lower and more compact under strong light
- Light demand: Medium to high — strong light essential for compact carpet growth
- CO2: Recommended for best results
- Best placement: Foreground
Planting Tips
Divide the pot into small clumps of approximately one eighth of the original portion and plant each clump a few centimetres apart across the foreground substrate. This spacing gives each clump room to spread via runners while encouraging the individual portions to grow together more quickly into a unified carpet. Always plant in an open, unshaded position — any significant overhead shading from taller plants will prevent the light levels needed for compact, healthy growth from reaching the carpet.
A nutrient-rich substrate makes a noticeable difference to growth rate and density — root tabs placed near the planting area are a simple and effective way to provide the additional nutrients this plant responds well to.
Additional Uses
Lilaeopsis brasiliensis is suitable for use in outdoor garden ponds during warmer months, and uniquely among freshwater aquarium plants, it also tolerates low salt concentrations — making it a rare and interesting option for planted brackish aquarium setups.
Compatible With
- All community fish, shrimp, and snails
- Ideal for nature-style aquascapes, Dutch aquariums, and iwagumi layouts
- Particularly stunning as a foreground carpet paired with taller background plants and hardscape
