Limnophila aquatica, commonly known as Giant Ambulia or Large Limnophila, is one of the most visually spectacular and impressively sized stem plants available in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Native to the slow-moving rivers, lakes, and wetlands of South-East Asia, this extraordinary plant produces whorls of finely branched, feathery light-green leaves that radiate outward from the stem in delicate, intricate fans — creating a texture and visual complexity that is genuinely unlike anything else in the planted aquarium. Under good growing conditions, individual stems can reach 10–20 inches (25–50 cm) tall and up to 6 inches (15 cm) wide, making this one of the most impressively proportioned stem plants available and a truly dramatic background plant in any spacious aquascape.

In good light, Limnophila aquatica produces generous horizontal side shoots that give it a wonderfully full, bushy appearance — and in open-top aquariums, stems that reach the surface will occasionally send shoots above the waterline, producing delicate small blue flowers that are a beautiful bonus for open aquascape setups.

Getting the Best Results

Limnophila aquatica reaches its full potential in a high-tech setup with good lighting, CO2 supplementation, and a nutrient-rich substrate — under these conditions it grows rapidly, branches prolifically, and develops its most impressive, full-bodied form. In lower light or without CO2 it will still grow, but more slowly and with a less compact, bushier appearance. Regular liquid fertiliser dosing helps maintain the intensity of the light green colouration and supports the plant's high nutrient demands given its fast growth rate.

Planting and Pruning Tips

Plant in groups of 5 or more stems for the most dramatic and natural display — the feathery, layered texture of multiple stems together is far more impactful than individual plants placed separately. Regular trimming is essential given the fast growth rate — trim the tops regularly and replant healthy cuttings to fill in the group, encourage branching from the lower stems, and prevent the plant from shading out lower-growing neighbours. The more actively it is managed, the fuller and more spectacular the result.
