Lobelia cardinalis | A Versatile and Stunning Stem Plant From North America
Lobelia cardinalis is a beautifully distinctive and versatile aquarium plant native to the marshes, riverbanks, and wetlands of North America — one of the few truly North American aquatic plants widely used in the planted aquarium hobby. In its emersed nursery form it displays striking dark green leaves with rich purple undersides, but once submerged in the aquarium it transforms into something quite different — developing soft, rounded, light green leaves on upright stems that bring a unique texture and colour tone to planted layouts that few other stem plants can replicate.
A staple of the classic Dutch aquarium style, Lobelia cardinalis is frequently used in so-called "plant streets" — dense, regimented rows of a single species that create bold bands of colour and texture — where its distinctive leaf shape and soft green colouration contrast beautifully against finer-leaved and darker plants. In open-top aquariums it will eventually grow above the water surface, where it produces breathtaking scarlet flowers and its leaves regain their characteristic purple colouring — making it as beautiful above the waterline as it is below.
It can also be grown outdoors in garden ponds during the warmer months, adding further versatility to an already exceptional plant.
Care at a Glance
- Scientific name: Lobelia cardinalis
- Origin: North America
- Type: Stem
- Growth rate: Medium
- Height: 4–12 inches (10–30+ cm) submerged; taller when grown emersed
- Width: 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) per stem
- Light demand: Low to medium
- CO2: Not required, though supplementation encourages stronger, more compact growth
- Best placement: Midground to background, planted in groups
Planting Tips
Plant in groups of 5 or more stems for the most dramatic and visually impactful display. Regular trimming of the tops encourages bushy, compact growth and prevents the lower stems from becoming bare — simply replant the trimmed tops to fill in and expand the group. In open-top setups, allow stems to grow above the surface for a spectacular flowering display that doubles as an impressive feature outside the tank.
Compatible With
- All community fish, shrimp, and snails
- Ideal for Dutch aquarium layouts and nature-style aquascapes
- Suitable for outdoor garden ponds in warmer months
- Particularly striking when contrasted against darker or finer-leaved plants
