Ludwigia repens ‘Rubin’ | A Richly Coloured Red Stem Plant From North America

Ludwigia repens ‘Rubin’ is a striking and richly coloured variety of Ludwigia repens, selected for its exceptionally deep, dark red leaves and stalks that bring a dramatic burst of colour to any planted aquarium. Native to North America, this medium-growing stem plant produces upright stems of 8–20 inches (20–50 cm) with leaves spanning 1.5–2.5 inches (4–6 cm) wide — substantial enough to make a genuine visual impact in the midground or background of any layout.

The deep burgundy-red of ‘Rubin’ provides one of the most effective and natural-looking colour contrasts available in the planted aquarium hobby — placed alongside bright green plants, its dark, rich tones create a depth and drama that transforms a good aquascape into a great one.

Getting the Best Colour

Ludwigia repens ‘Rubin’ will grow in medium light but its darkest, most intense red colouration develops under stronger lighting. In lower light the colour remains attractive but becomes softer and less vivid, and lower leaves may drop if light levels are too insufficient. Strong light combined with a quality liquid fertiliser and CO2 supplementation produces the deepest, most saturated burgundy-red this variety is capable of — well worth pursuing in a high-tech setup.

Planting and Pruning Tips

Plant in groups of 5 or more stems for maximum visual impact — the contrast of a dense block of dark red against surrounding green planting is one of the most effective colour combinations in aquascaping. Regular pruning encourages bushy, branching growth and prevents lower stems from becoming bare — trim the tops frequently and replant healthy cuttings to fill in the group and maintain a full, lush appearance. The more actively it is managed, the denser and more impressive the result.

Compatible With

  • All community fish, shrimp, and snails
  • Particularly striking alongside bright green plants such as Rotala rotundifolia, Hydrocotyle tripartita, and Microsorum where the colour contrast is at its most dramatic
  • Ideal for nature-style aquascapes, Dutch aquariums, and high-tech planted setups
