Mahecola Barb (Barbus mahecola) is a lesser-known freshwater species native to southern India, particularly in clear, flowing hill streams. This barb is appreciated for its slender body, peaceful demeanor, and subtle coloration—usually silvery with faint stripes and a sheen that glows under good lighting.

Though not as flashy as other barbs, the Mahecola Barb is an elegant and hardy addition to planted aquariums. They prefer to be kept in schools of 6 or more and do well with similarly peaceful tankmates. A well-aerated tank with some current, dense plants, and open swimming areas will help them thrive.
