Description & Care Info

Malaysian Driftwood | Classic Aquarium Hardscape With a Natural Dark Aesthetic

Malaysian Driftwood is a timeless and enduringly popular choice for freshwater aquarium hardscape — and for good reason. Its deep, rich brown colouration, dense and heavy wood structure, and naturally varied, gnarled form make it one of the most naturally authentic-looking décor pieces available, instantly lending any aquarium an established, aged, wild quality that takes planted tanks years to achieve on their own.

Pre-cleaned and aquarium-safe, each piece is ready to prepare and add to your setup straight away.

Why It Works So Well in the Aquarium

Malaysian Driftwood sinks readily compared to many other driftwood varieties thanks to its naturally dense, heavy structure — making it far easier to work with in aquascaping than lighter woods that float for weeks. Its dark, textured surface provides an ideal attachment point for epiphytic plants such as Anubias, Java Fern, Bucephalandra, and mosses, which will gradually colonise and spread across the wood over time, creating a beautifully integrated, natural-looking piece that improves with age. The surface also provides excellent biofilm and algae grazing surfaces for shrimp and snails, and its nooks and crevices offer natural shelter and hiding spots for fish and invertebrates.

Tannins and Water Colour

Malaysian Driftwood releases tannins into the water that will gradually tint it a warm, tea-brown colour — mimicking the natural blackwater environments many tropical fish and shrimp come from. This is completely harmless and beneficial for species from soft, acidic water habitats. To minimise discolouration, soak the wood in a bucket of water overnight — or for several days — before adding it to your aquarium. Running activated carbon in your filter will also help keep the water clear while still benefiting from the wood's natural properties.

What to Expect

  • Each piece is completely unique — sizes, shapes, and character vary naturally
  • Product pictured is size small — sizes may vary
  • A white, cotton-like fungal bloom may appear on the surface in the first few weeks — completely harmless and will disappear on its own or be consumed by shrimp and cleanup crew
  • Soak overnight before use to reduce tannin release and help the wood settle

Ideal For

  • Nature-style, biotope, and planted aquascapes
  • Shrimp tanks — excellent biofilm grazing surface and shelter for moulting shrimp
  • Community tanks as natural shelter, territory, and décor
  • Plant attachment — Anubias, Java Fern, mosses, and Bucephalandra all thrive attached to Malaysian Driftwood
