Manzanita Branch | Striking Natural Hardscape for Planted Aquariums

Manzanita is a favourite among aquascapers for good reason. Its intricate, fine branching structure, warm reddish-brown bark, and naturally elegant form create a visual impact in the aquarium that few other hardscape materials can match — instantly evoking submerged tree roots, fallen branches, and the kind of wild, naturalistic aesthetic that takes a planted tank from good to genuinely stunning.

Sustainably harvested, non-toxic, and safe for fish, shrimp, and invertebrates straight out of the box.

Why Aquascapers Love It

Manzanita's fine, multi-directional branching structure makes it exceptionally versatile in aquascape design — it works beautifully as a central focal point in an open hardscape layout, as a naturalistic anchor for mosses and epiphytic plants, or as a dramatic mid-tank feature that draws the eye and adds depth and height to the composition. Java Moss, Weeping Moss, Anubias, and Java Fern all attach readily to the branches and look extraordinary draped across the fine tips over time — gradually softening the wood's form and creating a lush, forest-floor aesthetic.

Its naturally hard, dense wood is also notably durable in aquatic environments, holding its structure and appearance for years without significant deterioration.

Tannins and Water Colour

Like all natural wood, Manzanita will release tannins into the water when first introduced, gradually tinting it a warm amber colour. Soaking the branch in a bucket of water for several days before adding it to the tank significantly reduces this — changing the water daily speeds the process up. Boiling smaller pieces is another effective method. Running activated carbon in your filter will help maintain water clarity once the wood is in the tank.

What to Expect

  • Each branch is completely unique in shape, size, and branching pattern — natural variation is part of the appeal
  • A white, cotton-like fungal bloom may appear on the surface in the first few weeks — completely harmless and will disappear on its own or be consumed by shrimp and cleanup crew
  • Branches may initially float — soaking beforehand helps, or anchor with rocks until the wood becomes waterlogged
  • Soak for several days before use to reduce tannin release

Ideal For

  • Nature-style, iwagumi, and biotope aquascapes
  • Planted aquariums as a branching focal point or plant attachment surface
  • Shrimp tanks — fine branches provide exceptional biofilm grazing surfaces and shelter for moulting shrimp and shrimplets
  • Mosses, Java Fern, Anubias, and Bucephalandra all attach beautifully to Manzanita's fine branching tips
