Melon Shrimp - Neocaridina Heteropoda var

Melon Shrimp are a vibrant and eye-catching color morph of Neocaridina heteropoda, prized for their rich orange to reddish “melon” tones that add warmth and contrast to planted aquariums. Their coloration can range from soft peach to deeper, almost fiery orange depending on genetics, diet, and tank conditions. When kept in a stable environment with good nutrition, their color intensifies over time, especially in well-established tanks.

These shrimp are peaceful, social, and constantly active, spending their time grazing on biofilm, algae, and microscopic organisms throughout the aquarium. They are excellent additions to planted tanks where they contribute to overall cleanliness, though they should not be relied on as the sole cleanup crew. Melon Shrimp are best kept in groups, where they feel secure and display more natural behavior, often seen picking through plants, moss, and substrate together.

A mature, planted aquarium is ideal, as it provides both food sources and hiding places—especially important during molting, when shrimp are most vulnerable. Gentle filtration and stable water parameters are key, as Neocaridina can be sensitive to sudden changes. They are beginner-friendly but still benefit greatly from consistency and proper care.
