Description & Care Info

Microsorum pteropus | The Classic Java Fern — A Hardy Staple for Every Aquarium

Microsorum pteropus, universally known as Java Fern, is one of the most iconic, widely kept, and instantly recognisable aquarium plants in the freshwater hobby — and for very good reason. Native to the rivers, streams, and waterfalls of tropical Asia, this tough, adaptable water fern has been a cornerstone of planted aquarium keeping for decades, beloved by beginners and experienced aquarists alike for its extraordinary hardiness, striking appearance, and virtually indestructible nature. Growing to 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) tall with broad, lance-shaped dark green fronds, it brings a bold, natural, jungle-like quality to any aquascape.

Sold here in a 5 cm pot, ready to attach to your hardscape or place in your aquarium straight away.

Practically Indestructible

Java Fern is one of the very few aquarium plants that genuinely thrives in almost any conditions — low light, no CO2, a wide range of water parameters, and even in tanks with plant-eating fish that would devastate softer-leaved species. Its tough, leathery fronds are left alone by virtually all herbivorous fish, making it one of the most reliable and practical planting options available regardless of what you keep.

Care at a Glance

  • Scientific name: Microsorum pteropus
  • Also known as: Java Fern, Asian Water Fern
  • Origin: Tropical Asia
  • Type: Rhizomatous — epiphytic water fern
  • Growth rate: Slow to medium
  • Height: 6–12 inches (15–30 cm)
  • Light demand: Low — grows in virtually all lighting conditions
  • CO2: Not required
  • Best placement: Foreground to background depending on size — attach to hardscape for best results

Planting Tips

Java Fern is best attached to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe glue. It will gradually root itself firmly in place over several weeks and can then be left to spread naturally. It can also be planted in substrate, but the rhizome — the thick horizontal stem from which the leaves and roots emerge — must remain fully exposed above the surface at all times. Burying the rhizome will cause it to rot and kill the plant.

Propagation is simple and rewarding — the horizontal rhizome can be split at any point and each section will grow into an independent plant. New plantlets also frequently develop along the edges and tips of mature leaves, which can be left on the parent plant or carefully removed and reattached elsewhere once they have developed a few roots of their own.

A Note on the Black Spots Under the Leaves

If you notice small black or brown spots on the underside of your Java Fern's leaves, there is no cause for alarm — these are sporangia, the plant's natural reproductive organs, and are a completely normal and healthy sign in a mature specimen. They are frequently mistaken for signs of disease or algae by newcomers to the hobby, but are in fact an indicator of a thriving, well-established plant.

Compatible With

  • All community fish, shrimp, and snails
  • One of the very few plants suitable for tanks with herbivorous or plant-eating fish including goldfish, Silver Dollars, and large cichlids
  • Ideal for low-tech setups, beginner aquariums, and virtually any aquascape style
  • A natural and beautiful companion to Anubias, Bucephalandra, and other epiphytic plants on shared pieces of driftwood or rockwork
