Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow’ | A Sleek and Elegant Java Fern Variant

Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow’ is a refined and distinctly elegant variant of the classic Java Fern, producing slender, lance-shaped leaves that grow at a more upright angle from the rhizome than the standard form — giving it a taller, more graceful silhouette that works particularly well in smaller aquariums and detailed aquascapes where a finer, less bulky texture is needed. Sold in a 5 cm pot and ready to attach to your hardscape straight away.

Leaves reach 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) in length on a creeping rhizome of 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) or more, gradually spreading across driftwood and rocks as it establishes itself. Like all Microsorum pteropus varieties, it shares the same indestructible, low-maintenance nature that has made Java Fern a staple of the hobby for decades — thriving in low light without CO2 injection and left alone by virtually all plant-eating fish.

Care at a Glance

  • Scientific name: Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow’
  • Also known as: Narrow Leaf Java Fern, Narrow Java Fern
  • Origin: Asia
  • Type: Rhizomatous
  • Growth rate: Slow
  • Height: 4–8 inches (10–20+ cm)
  • Light demand: Low — tolerates a wide range of lighting conditions
  • CO2: Not required
  • Best placement: Foreground to midground in smaller tanks, midground in larger setups — attach to hardscape

Planting Tips

Attach to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe glue — the rhizome must remain fully exposed above the substrate at all times. Burying the rhizome will cause it to rot and kill the plant. New plantlets frequently develop along the edges and tips of mature leaves and can be left to develop on the parent plant or carefully removed and reattached elsewhere once they have developed a few roots.

A Note on the Black Spots Under the Leaves

Small black or brown spots on the underside of the leaves are sporangia — the plant’s natural reproductive organs — and are a completely normal and healthy sign in a mature specimen. They are frequently mistaken for signs of disease or algae by newcomers to the hobby, but are in fact an indicator of a thriving, well-established plant.

Compatible With

  • All community fish, shrimp, and snails
  • Suitable for tanks with plant-eating fish — its tough, leathery leaves are left alone by virtually all herbivorous species
  • Particularly well suited to smaller aquariums where its narrower, more upright form fits without overwhelming the layout
  • A natural companion to other Java Fern varieties, Anubias, and Bucephalandra on shared pieces of driftwood or rockwork
