Microsorum pteropus ‘Trident’ | A Distinctive and Versatile Java Fern Cultivar
Microsorum pteropus ‘Trident’ is one of the most visually interesting Java Fern cultivars available — immediately recognisable by its uniquely lobed, tripartite leaves that split into three distinct points, resembling a trident or fork at the tip. The degree of splitting varies naturally between individual leaves, from nearly whole to deeply multipartite, giving each plant a pleasingly irregular, organic quality that adds genuine character and texture to any aquascape. Sold in a 5 cm pot and ready to attach to your hardscape straight away.
Growing to 6–8 inches (15–20+ cm), it sits between the compact Narrow and the larger standard Java Fern in terms of scale — fitting comfortably in both smaller nano setups and larger planted aquariums without overpowering either. Sharing the same tough, undemanding nature as all Microsorum pteropus varieties, it thrives in low light without CO2 injection and is left alone by virtually all plant-eating fish — a reliable and rewarding plant for aquarists at any experience level.
Care at a Glance
- Scientific name: Microsorum pteropus ‘Trident’
- Also known as: Trident Java Fern, Fork Leaf Java Fern
- Origin: Cultivar
- Type: Rhizomatous
- Growth rate: Slow
- Height: 6–8 inches (15–20+ cm)
- Light demand: Low — tolerates a wide range of lighting conditions
- CO2: Not required
- Best placement: Foreground to midground — attach to hardscape
Planting Tips
Attach to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe glue. The rhizome — the thick horizontal stem from which the leaves and roots emerge — must remain fully exposed above the substrate at all times. Burying the rhizome will cause it to rot and kill the plant.
New plantlets frequently develop on the tips of mature leaves — a characteristic shared by all Java Fern varieties. These can be left to develop on the parent plant for a fuller, more lush appearance, or carefully removed and reattached elsewhere once they have developed a few roots of their own.
A Note on the Black Spots Under the Leaves
Small black or brown spots on the underside of the leaves are sporangia — the plant’s natural reproductive organs — and are a completely normal and healthy sign in a mature specimen. They are frequently mistaken for disease or algae by newcomers to the hobby, but are in fact an indicator of a healthy, well-established plant.
Compatible With
- All community fish, shrimp, and snails
- Suitable for tanks with plant-eating fish — its tough, leathery leaves are left alone by virtually all herbivorous species
- Works well in both smaller nano tanks and larger planted aquariums
- A natural companion to other Java Fern varieties, Anubias, and Bucephalandra on shared pieces of driftwood or rockwork
