A spacious aquarium with a soft sandy substrate, driftwood, smooth rocks, and hardy plants such as Anubias and Java Fern replicates their natural Orinoco basin habitat beautifully. Slow to moderate water flow is preferred — these fish come from calm, deep river systems and dislike strong currents. Tannins from driftwood and Indian almond leaves help recreate the soft, acidic blackwater conditions they thrive in and will enhance their colouration noticeably. Strong filtration and regular bi-weekly water changes of 25–30% are essential given their size and bioload.
