NewCal Cuttlebone | Natural Calcium Supplement for Aquarium Invertebrates, Turtles, and More
NewCal Cuttlebone is a 100% natural calcium supplement trusted across a wide range of applications — and one we recommend wholeheartedly for freshwater aquarium use. For shrimp keepers, snail enthusiasts, and anyone running soft or remineralised RO water, it is one of the simplest and most effective ways to ensure your invertebrates have access to the calcium they need for strong shells, healthy moults, and proper growth.
Unlike synthetic calcium powders, cuttlebone dissolves slowly and naturally in water, releasing calcium and trace minerals steadily over time without causing sudden parameter swings. Completely edible and highly bioavailable, it is grazed on directly by shrimp and snails as it breaks down — making it both a supplement and a natural foraging activity in one.
Key Benefits
- 100% natural calcium and trace mineral source — no synthetic additives
- Dissolves slowly for steady, gentle calcium release that won't spike parameters
- Encourages natural foraging behaviour as shrimp and snails graze directly on the surface
- Helps prevent shell erosion, pitting, cracking, and failed moults in freshwater invertebrates
- Completely safe for all fish, shrimp, snails, crayfish, and aquatic turtles
- Also suitable for tortoises, birds, and reptiles requiring calcium supplementation
How to Use
Drop directly into the aquarium — no preparation needed. The cuttlebone will initially float, gradually becoming waterlogged and sinking over time. It can also be weighted down with a rock or clip if preferred. Replace when fully consumed.
How Much to Use
Cuttlebone dissolves at different rates depending on your water hardness, pH, and how actively your invertebrates are grazing on it. As a practical starting point:
- Under 10 gallons — half a piece or one small piece at a time
- 10–20 gallons — one piece at a time
- 20–40 gallons — one to two pieces at a time
- 40+ gallons — two or more pieces depending on your invertebrate load
Monitor your GH levels regularly and watch your snail shells for early signs of calcium deficiency — pitting, thinning edges, or cracking indicate more calcium is needed. Replace as consumed rather than on a fixed schedule.
Ideal For
- Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp colonies
- Freshwater snails — Nerites, Mystery Snails, Assassin Snails, and more
- Crayfish and freshwater crabs
- Aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles
- Tortoises, birds, and reptiles requiring dietary calcium
- Any soft water or remineralised RO aquarium setup
