NewCal Indian Almond Bark

NewCal Indian Almond Bark | Natural Tannin Source for Blackwater Aquariums

Indian Almond Bark delivers the same powerful natural benefits as the widely loved Indian Almond Leaf — blackwater tannins, beneficial compounds, and a naturally acidic, antibacterial environment — in a slower-releasing, longer-lasting bark form that makes it an excellent choice for aquarists who want sustained tannin output without frequent replacement.

Sourced from the Terminalia catappa tree, this bark releases tannins steadily into the water, gradually tinting it the warm, tea-brown colour that mimics the natural blackwater environments of Southeast Asia and South America. These tannins have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, help soften and acidify water gently over time, and create the kind of low-pH, mineral-poor conditions that fish such as Bettas, wild-caught tetras, dwarf cichlids, and blackwater shrimp genuinely thrive in.

Key Benefits

• Releases tannins steadily for a longer-lasting blackwater effect than leaves alone
• Natural antibacterial and antifungal properties support fish health and reduce disease pressure
• Helps lower pH and soften water gently over time — ideal for blackwater species
• Encourages biofilm growth — a valuable natural food source for shrimp, fry, and invertebrates
• Completely natural, chemical-free, and safe for all fish, shrimp, and invertebrates

How to Use

Soak pieces in water for 24–48 hours before adding to the aquarium to kick-start tannin release and reduce initial floating. Add directly to the tank, place in your filter, or use in a mesh bag for more controlled placement. Replace as pieces break down over time. Tannins will gradually tint the water amber — use activated carbon in your filter if you prefer clearer water while still benefiting from the biological properties of the bark.
