Natural Cuttlebone | Calcium Supplement for Shrimp, Snails, and Freshwater Invertebrates
Cuttlebone is the simplest and most effective way to ensure your freshwater invertebrates are getting the calcium they need — and at Poseidon Aquatics we use it ourselves across our own shrimp and snail tanks. Sourced from natural deep-sea cuttlefish bones with no additives and no bleaching, these are pure, unprocessed pieces that dissolve slowly in water, releasing calcium steadily over time without causing sudden parameter swings.
Calcium is essential for shell and exoskeleton health in shrimp, snails, crayfish, and other invertebrates. In soft water or remineralised RO setups where natural calcium levels are low, deficiency can lead to thin, pitted, or cracked shells and failed moults in shrimp — adding cuttlebone is one of the easiest and most reliable ways to prevent this. Simply drop a piece into the tank and let it do its job.
How to Use
Drop directly into the aquarium — no preparation needed. The cuttlebone will float initially and gradually become waterlogged and sink over time, or can be weighted down with a rock or clip. Shrimp and snails will graze directly on the surface as it dissolves. Replace when fully consumed.
How Much to Use
There is no strict universal dose — cuttlebone dissolves at different rates depending on your water hardness, pH, and how many invertebrates are actively grazing on it. As a practical starting point:
- Under 10 gallons — half a piece or one small piece at a time
- 10–20 gallons — one piece at a time
- 20–40 gallons — one to two pieces at a time
- 40+ gallons — two or more pieces depending on your invertebrate load
The best way to monitor calcium levels is to test your GH regularly and keep an eye on your snail shells — pitting, thinning edges, or cracking are the earliest visible signs that more calcium is needed. Replace cuttlebone as it is consumed rather than on a fixed schedule, and let your water parameters and your animals guide you.

- Completely safe for all freshwater fish, shrimp, snails, and invertebrates
- Helps prevent shell erosion, pitting, and failed moults in shrimp and snails
- Ideal for soft water and remineralised RO setups where calcium levels may be insufficient
