The OB Peacock is a vibrant and highly sought-after African cichlid known for its bold, blotched “orange blotch” patterning layered over bright base colors. Depending on the individual, you may see combinations of orange, blue, yellow, white, and black marbling, making each fish uniquely patterned. Mature males develop especially intense coloration and shimmering blue highlights, creating a striking focal point in a Malawi cichlid aquarium.
This species is considered moderate in difficulty and best suited to aquarists familiar with African cichlid care. OB Peacocks originate from Lake Malawi and require stable, alkaline water conditions. While generally less aggressive than Mbuna, males can be territorial—especially toward other similarly colored or shaped males—so thoughtful stocking and tank structure are important.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons
-
Temperature: 24–28°C
-
pH: 7.8–8.6
-
Water Hardness: Moderately hard to hard (alkaline conditions required)
-
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
-
Diet: Omnivore with a preference for protein-based cichlid pellets and frozen foods
OB Peacocks are best kept in Lake Malawi cichlid setups with other Peacock cichlids or compatible Haplochromines. Avoid mixing with highly aggressive Mbuna unless the tank is large and carefully balanced. They are not suitable for peaceful community aquariums or small fish.
