Omba Rainbowfish - Melanotaenia Dumasi

The Omba Rainbowfish, scientifically known as Melanotaenia dumasi, is a rare and beautifully understated species prized for its soft, natural coloration and active schooling behavior. Unlike some of the more intensely colored rainbowfish, this species displays a subtle blend of silvery-blue tones with warm golden or amber highlights, often accented by a gentle sheen that shifts in the light. When settled and in good condition, males in particular will develop richer color and a slightly deeper body, especially during displays.

Peaceful and constantly on the move, Omba Rainbowfish thrive in groups and bring a calm, natural energy to the aquarium. They are best kept in schools of at least 6, where their social dynamics and occasional sparring displays between males can be observed. Despite their activity, they are non-aggressive and mix well with other similarly sized, peaceful species. A longer tank is ideal to accommodate their steady swimming and encourage natural behavior.

A planted aquarium with open swimming space suits them best, along with clean, well-maintained water. They appreciate stable conditions and benefit from regular water changes to maintain their health and coloration. Feeding a varied diet will help bring out their best—high-quality flakes or micro pellets paired with frozen or live foods will enhance both color and vitality.
