Panaque Pleco L239

The Panaque Pleco L239 is a compact and attractive wood-eating pleco, appreciated for its warm brown to golden tones and subtle striping. Its smaller size and manageable temperament make it a great option for aquarists looking to keep a Panaqolus-type pleco without needing a massive tank.

Like other members of this group, L239 has a natural affinity for driftwood, often seen rasping on it throughout the day. This behavior is not just for feeding—it also aids in digestion and is essential to their overall health. They are generally more active than many larger plecos and can often be seen out grazing, especially in well-established tanks.

Care Requirements:
A minimum tank size of around 20–30 gallons is recommended, with larger tanks preferred for stability and compatibility with tankmates. Provide plenty of driftwood, which is essential for both grazing and digestion. They do best in warm, well-oxygenated water with stable parameters and good filtration. Moderate flow and clean water are important, as they can be sensitive to poor conditions.

Diet:
Panque L239 are primarily wood grazers (xylivores) and must have constant access to driftwood. Supplement their diet with sinking wafers, high-quality pellets, and fresh vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and squash. Occasional protein-rich foods can be offered, but their diet should remain mostly plant- and wood-based.

Tankmates:
They are peaceful and suitable for community aquariums with non-aggressive fish. Good tankmates include tetras, rasboras, peaceful cichlids, and other calm species. They may show mild territorial behavior toward other bottom-dwelling fish or similar plecos, especially in smaller tanks, so providing adequate space and multiple hiding spots is important.
